A Former San Francisco Bay Area Hat Designer and personal hat designer for actress
Whoopi Goldberg, turns her focus on art!
Around 1986 I thought of a "side job" project, something other then my normal
day job. I began designing hats, I was able to get my designs in many Bay Area specialty
stores including Nordstrom and later I had a store in the Portland area. A bit after that
I met Whoopi in Berkeley CA at one of the artist stores that carried my designs. She
happened to be filming Made in America with Ted Dansen across the street. It was her day
off and she came into the store to check it out. I happen to be in the right place at the
right time. Well we met and I made her quite a few hats. She is a great person, she gave
me words of encouragement to pursue my dreams in art or fashion design, I gave up my day
job of 14 years as a manicurist and began sculpting and painting.
Being self taught has been a challenge. When first starting out in canine art my collies
became my models along with many dog magazines, dog shows and books. The world of art has
always been my first love. As a child I loved to draw so much that if I had a pencil in my
hand I would draw on the walls of my bedroom, bathroom you name it! Of course my parents
weren't happy about that.
The hats are long gone now, but the sculpting, painting and drawings of many canines and
humans have been a wonderful part of my life.
